alpha.bet [al-fuh-bet, - bit] – the alphabet, a system of writing developed in the ancient Near East and transmitted from the northwest Semites to the Greeks, in which each symbol ideally represents one sound unit in the spoken language, and from which most alphabetical scripts are derived. My theme stems from a summer holiday to Greece where I found myself comparing the Greek and English alphabet. The development of this symbolic language and its visual communication forms the basis of this project; interested by the superficial aesthetic of the letters and how they looked more like symbols, I decided to use the Greek alphabet as the basis of my project. Through exploring composition, repetition, tessellation and symmetry, the starting principle was to break the alphabet down by abstracting the letters into an unrecognizable form. The aim was to incorporate these compositions into a visually interesting art installation or textile piece that created a sense of illusion.
