Manipulated

Fascinated by the aesthetic of letters and typography, this project develops on the idea of using the alphabet to create geometric and abstract surface designs. Through exploring composition, repetition, tessellation and symmetry, the starting principle was to break down the alphabet into an unrecognizable form. Using alphabets which are less recognizable, for example the Phoenician and Runic alphabets, the letters are freed from their role as an information provider and turned them into something more aesthetically interesting. The compositions are not words but different combinations of letters, allowing them to be disengaged from any meaning. The aim was to incorporate these visual compositions into a collection of interior wall-coverings and surfaces.
